CARNIVAL in Trinidad

No trip to Trinidad would be complete without experiencing CARNIVAL!
Carnival season starts right after the Holiday season ends, and people from all across the globe come to take part in it. As part of our Caribbean Culture and Society course, we were not only given the opportunity to observe carnival, but we were actually required to BE IN Carnival... costumes, dance, and all.
Carnival doesn't just end with the festival... there's also J'ouvert (the morning before Carnival), Calypso competitions, Steel Pan Band cometitions, Costume competitions (for kids & adults), oh, the list goes on. To sum it all up, Carnival evolved out of the desire to speak out against the injustices of colonialism. If you would like to learn more about this, I would suggest to read The Dragon Can't Dance by Earl Lovelace (I have a copy if you are seriously interested).
